To this end, NMTSA strives to 1) innovate and lead in developing and delivering best practice approaches and access to neurologic music therapy services,
2) excel in the general education of persons with neurological impairments, 3) deliver community education/training to family members, caregivers and professionals regarding NMT and the use of rhythm in the identification and implementation of accommodations and positive supports, and 4) promote advances in research related to best practice approaches.
Our Therapists
All of the therapists at NMTSA hold the national certification credential MT-BC issued by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (website). Additionally, all NMTSA therapists are required to obtain additional advanced clinical training in Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) through the Center for Biomedical Research in Music at Colorado State University (website) and to maintain Fellowship status with the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy. Fellowship is maintained by attending NMT Fellowship training every five years where each therapist must present their clinical work in NMT for evaluation by academy staff.
Our Clinic
NMTSA's clinic space was designed and built in 2007 to be optimized for NMT activities. It contains 12 individual therapy rooms, a large group room for group NMT sessions, two large classrooms for our elementary education ACT School program, administrative offices, rooms for contracted speech and occupational therapists, a recording studio in which clients can make music and produce their own CDs, a spacious waiting room, and a Parent Empowerment Center containing research articles and electronic resources for education about NMT and developmental disabilities. We are committed to providing a safe environment for all our clients including being frangrance-free as well as sensitivity to other client allergies and needs.
About Neurologic Music Therapy
Neurologic Music Therapy is defined as the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor function due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system. Neurologic Music Therapy is research-based. Its treatment techniques are based on the scientific knowledge in music perception and production and the effects thereof on nonmusical brain and behavior functions. For more information about how NMT is used at our clinic, please visit our FAQ page. For more information about the history and research of NMT, please visit the website of the Center for Biomedical Research in Music at Colorado State University.
